Learn the Basics
Understand the 4 Rules of Firearm Safety

1. Treat every firearm as if it's loaded.
2. Never point at anything you're not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
4. Know your target and what's beyond it.

These aren't suggestions. They're the foundation of everything else on this list. Commit them to memory.

Know Your State Laws

Every state has different laws regarding firearm purchase, ownership, and carry. Enter your zip code below to see a summary of your state's key laws.

This is a summary, not legal advice. Laws change — always verify with official sources. Last reviewed: March 2026.

Understand Firearm Types

Handguns: Semi-automatic pistols (like a Glock or Springfield) and revolvers. Compact, concealable, most common for personal protection.

Rifles: Long guns with rifled barrels. AR-15s, bolt-actions, and lever-actions. Used for home defense, sport shooting, and hunting.

Shotguns: Fire a spread of pellets or a single slug. Pump-action and semi-auto. Popular for home defense and hunting.

Get Hands-On
Visit a Range

Your first range visit can feel intimidating. Here's what to expect: You'll need a valid ID. Most ranges rent firearms so you can try before you buy. Bring ear and eye protection (or rent them). A range safety officer will help you.

Go with someone experienced if you can. If not, call ahead and tell them you're new — they'll take care of you.

Handle Different Firearms

Try at least 2-3 different types before deciding. A compact 9mm feels very different from a full-size .45. Rent a few and see what fits your hand, your strength, and your comfort level.

Don't let anyone pressure you into something that doesn't feel right. The best firearm is the one you'll actually practice with.

Take a Safety Course

Even in Arizona where no permit is required, we strongly recommend a basic firearms safety course. Look for NRA Basic Pistol, USCCA courses, or local range classes.

A few hours of structured training will give you more confidence than weeks of YouTube videos. Worth every penny.

Make Your Choice
Decide: Lethal, Non-Lethal, or Both

There's no wrong answer. Pepper spray and a personal alarm might be exactly right for you. A firearm might be right too. Or both. This is YOUR decision based on YOUR comfort level.

Whatever you choose, confidence comes from knowing how to use what you carry. That's what matters.

Choose Your First Product

Based on your path, here are some of our recommendations:

Understand the Buying Process

Buying online: You purchase from us, we ship to a local FFL dealer, you pick it up there after a background check (usually 5-30 minutes in AZ). Note: the NICS check can sometimes result in a "delayed" status, which may take up to 3 business days to resolve.

Buying non-lethal: Ships directly to your door in most states. No FFL needed. Pepper spray, personal alarms, and similar items are straightforward — though a few states have restrictions on certain products.

Note: Some states have additional requirements like waiting periods, permits, or registration. Check your state's specific requirements.

We walk you through every step. No surprises.

Set Up Right
Get Proper Storage

If you have a firearm in your home, you need a safe or lockbox. Period. Especially with kids. A StopBox gives you instant access while keeping everyone else out.

No batteries, no electronics — just a patented mechanical lock that works every time.

Learn Basic Maintenance

Clean your firearm after every range session. Learn to field strip it (YouTube is great for your specific model). Keep it lubricated. Store it properly.

A well-maintained firearm is a reliable firearm. It takes 15 minutes and becomes second nature.

Practice Regularly

Owning a firearm is a responsibility. Regular practice builds confidence, muscle memory, and safety habits. Aim for the range at least once a month when starting out.

Dry-fire practice at home (with a confirmed-unloaded firearm) is free and builds fundamentals between range trips.

Level Up
(Optional)
Consider Concealed Carry

Many states allow concealed carry, but requirements vary widely. Some states require permits and training, others (like Arizona) allow permitless carry for eligible adults. Note: federal law requires you to be 21+ to purchase a handgun from a licensed dealer. Research your state's specific laws and consider getting formal training regardless of legal requirements.

A CCW permit — even in permitless carry states — has benefits: reciprocity with other states, may skip the NICS check at purchase, and the training is valuable. The permit course covers legal considerations you won't get elsewhere.

Build Your Emergency Kit

A basic emergency kit: first aid supplies, flashlight, water purification, emergency blanket, multi-tool, communication plan. Start small and build over time.

Preparedness isn't about paranoia. It's about peace of mind.
